The Quad nations—India, the United States, Japan, and Australia—have announced their first-ever joint infrastructure project: the development of strategic port infrastructure in Fiji. The initiative aims to address capacity constraints in Pacific Island nations while strengthening regional connectivity, trade resilience, and maritime security across the Indo-Pacific.
The Fiji port project was unveiled during the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi and is being positioned as a demonstration of the group’s ability to deliver high-quality, resilient infrastructure. The project is expected to enhance logistics capabilities, support economic development in the Pacific region, and improve maritime connectivity for regional trade routes.
Alongside the port initiative, the Quad launched a new Indo-Pacific Energy Security Initiative and expanded cooperation on critical minerals supply chains. These measures are designed to strengthen energy resilience, secure strategic resources, and reduce vulnerabilities in global supply chains that support semiconductors, clean energy technologies, defence systems, and advanced manufacturing.
The announcement reflects the Quad’s growing focus on delivering tangible economic and infrastructure outcomes in addition to its traditional emphasis on maritime security and regional stability. The Fiji project could serve as a model for future Quad-led infrastructure developments across the Indo-Pacific region.
