The government of Andhra Pradesh plans to open parts of its mineral-rich coastline for rare earth and titanium-bearing beach sand mining. The initiative aims to reduce India’s dependence on imports from China and develop a domestic value chain for critical minerals used in high-tech industries.

The state’s mining agency has identified multiple deposits across coastal districts such as Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, and Krishna. These deposits contain minerals like ilmenite, rutile, zircon, and monazite, which are important sources of rare earth elements and titanium used in electronics, aerospace, and renewable energy technologies.

Andhra Pradesh holds about 25% of India’s beach sand mineral reserves, positioning the state as a potential hub for titanium processing and rare earth manufacturing. The plan also includes building downstream processing and manufacturing units along the coast.

Why This Matters

• Strengthens India’s rare earth and critical mineral supply security
• Reduces dependence on China-dominated mineral supply chains
• Supports industries like EVs, renewable energy, aerospace, and electronics
• Positions Andhra Pradesh as a titanium and advanced materials manufacturing hub
