India is nearing a landmark agreement between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and GE Aerospace for the co-production of advanced F414 jet engines in India. The two sides have already finalized key technical agreements, with a final commercial contract expected soon.

The engines will power next-generation indigenous fighter programs such as the Tejas Mk-2, Twin-Engine Deck-Based Fighter (TEDBF), and Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). The deal is expected to include significant technology transfer, enabling India to build advanced jet engines domestically—one of the most complex defence technologies.

This collaboration builds on earlier agreements and reflects deepening India–US defence cooperation, while also addressing challenges such as engine supply delays in existing programs and strengthening long-term aerospace capabilities.

Why This Matters

• Strengthens India’s indigenous fighter jet and aerospace capabilities
• Enables technology transfer in critical jet engine manufacturing
• Supports major programs like Tejas Mk-2 and AMCA
• Reduces reliance on foreign engine suppliers and boosts self-reliance
