A senior US envoy emphasized that India’s role in the global semiconductor supply chain is “essential” as countries compete to dominate chip production. Speaking during the inauguration of Micron Technology’s semiconductor facility in Sanand, Gujarat, the envoy noted that building resilient chip supply chains requires trusted manufacturing ecosystems across multiple countries.
The envoy highlighted that India offers a secure and reliable alternative for semiconductor manufacturing, particularly as some countries expand production of legacy chips. With around 10 semiconductor projects worth nearly $19 billion currently under development in India, the country is emerging as a key partner in strengthening global chip supply chains.
India’s focus on chip design, assembly, testing, marking, and packaging (ATMP) complements the United States’ push to manufacture advanced chips, strengthening technology cooperation between the two nations.
Why This Matters
• Positions India as a trusted partner in global semiconductor supply chains
• Strengthens India–US technology and manufacturing collaboration
• Supports development of secure and resilient chip supply ecosystems
• Boosts India’s ambition to become a global semiconductor manufacturing hub
