Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Micron Technology’s Semiconductor Assembly, Test, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, marking the start of commercial production of semiconductor memory modules in India. The project, with an investment of about ₹22,500 crore, is one of the first major semiconductor manufacturing projects under the India Semiconductor Mission.

The facility will convert advanced DRAM and NAND semiconductor wafers from Micron’s global manufacturing network into finished memory and storage products such as RAM modules and solid-state drives (SSDs). It will serve global markets and support growing demand for memory used in AI, data centres, smartphones, and high-performance computing.

Why This Matters

• Strengthens India’s semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem
• Reduces dependency on imported semiconductor packaging and testing
• Supports AI, electronics, and data-centre industries
• Creates thousands of jobs and advanced manufacturing capabilities
