Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer is promoting its KC-390 Millennium military transport aircraft as a strong contender for the Indian Air Force’s Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) program, which aims to procure around 80 aircraft to replace ageing fleets such as the AN-32 and IL-76.
The KC-390 is a jet-powered tactical airlifter capable of carrying up to 26 tonnes of payload, making it faster and more capable than many existing transport aircraft in its class. The aircraft is designed for multi-mission roles including troop transport, cargo operations, aerial refuelling, medical evacuation, and humanitarian missions.
Embraer has highlighted that the aircraft is already being adopted by several NATO-aligned countries and believes it can strengthen India’s tactical airlift capability while supporting local aerospace manufacturing partnerships in the future.
Why This Matters
• Strengthens India’s military airlift and logistics capabilities
• Supports modernization of the Indian Air Force transport fleet
• Encourages aerospace manufacturing partnerships in India
• Enhances defence readiness and rapid deployment capabilities
